Plot summary
In the early twentieth century, plume hunters kill rare birds across the Florida Everglades until the population is endangered. The Audubon Society appoints volunteer game wardens to enforce conservation laws, and two wardens have been killed near Miami. Walt Murdock comes to town to teach nature studies at a high school. Near a train he pulls a plume from a wealthy matron's hat and argues with her husband, George Leggett. Arrested, he is sentenced instead to serve as a game warden. On his first canoe trip across the swamp, he meets Cottonmouth, whose gang of bird poachers shoots at birds near their nesting grounds. Murdock returns and describes the nature he has seen to the storekeeper Aaron Nathanson and his daughter Naomi.
