Plot summary
Fourteen-year-old Ellie Christianson shares a home with her mother Karen, her father Ben and her younger sister Inger in a comfortable neighborhood. Ben's work keeps him busy and away from the house, and he is involved with Lena, the housekeeper. Karen, for her part, carries on with Lawson Smith, the neighbor next door, while the girls get ready for school. She intends to leave Ben and take the daughters, so she lets Lena go. Karen does not know that Ellie has watched one of her meetings with Lawson. Mother and daughter argue often, and one clash follows Ellie's refusal to obey an order about make-up at school. Karen is then found beaten to death at home, and Ellie takes over her mother's duties toward Ben.

- Director Michael Steinberg considered Rachael Leigh Cook and Katie Holmes for the role of Ellie Christianson, but Julia Stiles, then 15, won the part by faxing him a letter offering her own take on the character.
- Paramount picked up Wicked for a release in three hundred theaters in October 1998 but backed out during final negotiations, and a dispute over Cliff Martinez's score and the final cut kept the film on the shelf for another year and a half before Columbia TriStar bought it for video.
