A pawnbroker, Kim Si-hoo, is found dead in a derelict building in a remote town, and the police cannot agree whether he was killed or took his own life. Fourteen years earlier, a dead man was discovered aboard a deserted ship, and the woman believed to be his lover was found dead soon afterward. Her daughter, Lee Ji-ah, moved in with an aunt, took the name Yoo Mi-ho and keeps a flower garden. Detective Jo Min-woo spots a link between the cases and asks Han Dong-soo, who handled the earlier inquiry, for help. Dong-soo reopens the case.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Han Suk-kyu, then 44, turned down the role of the 50-year-old detective Han Dong-soo in White Night because he felt too young, and only accepted after director Park Shin-woo wrote him a handwritten letter explaining why he had to use him.
- Son Ye-jin was director Park Shin-woo's first and only choice to play Yoo Mi-ho, partly because the two had attended high school together in Daegu, where he remembered her as very quiet.
- Park Shin-woo wrote the screenplay after being impressed with Keigo Higashino's novel Journey Under the Midnight Sun, and sent it to the author, who called it "superb" and allowed it to be adapted into a film.
- For actor Go Soo, playing Kim Yo-han in White Night was his first onscreen role after completing his two-year mandatory military service.
