Plot summary
Every year thousands of Latin American migrants set out on a journey of hundreds of miles toward the United States, many of them riding on top of freight trains. Roughly five percent of those traveling alone are children. Kevin, a fourteen-year-old Honduran, sets out with Fito, thirteen, who wants work in America and a life away from his grandmother and an absent mother; Kevin's mother hopes he will reach the United States and send money back. Yuriko, seventeen, called El Perro, has no family, begs on the streets of Chiapas, and hopes a household in the United States will adopt him. Juan Carlos, thirteen, leaves his mother in Guatemala for work in America, aiming for New York, where the father who abandoned him went. Olga and Freddy, nine-year-old friends from Honduras, head for the border to find their families.
