Plot summary

Kitty manifests from the pages of Anne Frank's diary in the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, where she was the imaginary friend Anne wrote to. Invisible and intangible to the visitors touring the house, she finds no trace of Anne or her family. Believing Anne is still alive, she leaves the house with the diary. At the police station the officers send her to places named after Anne. She meets Peter, a boy she saw stealing wallets at the house the day before, and learns that straying too far from the diary dissolves her into ink. Peter helps her as she searches.
