Plot summary
Younes grows up on his family's wheat field outside Oran, until the field is burned by the men of the Cheikh, a creditor the family cannot pay. The colonial administration hands the land to the Cheikh, and the ruined family moves into the city, where Younes's father Issa takes hard work for little money. Worn down, Issa gives his son to his older brother Mohamed, a pharmacist, and Mohamed's wife Madeleine, a piano teacher, renames the boy Jonas. She has no children of her own and raises him as hers, sending him to piano lessons, where he meets Émilie, a girl whose French parents settled in Algeria. Political trouble then pushes Mohamed to move the household to Rio Salado, a small town of Spanish pieds-noirs, and Jonas finds new friends there.
