Plot summary
Jiawei Shen is a Chinese-Australian artist whose latest project, a mural he calls Tower of Babel, will measure 130 square meters across four panels and rise three stories, taking years to complete. Its subject is the turbulent history of Communism, and Shen says the work gives meaning to his whole life. His wife, the fellow artist Lan Wang, finds the plan crazy. While he paints in his studio, the two recount their lives in Mao's China, the Great Famine and the Cultural Revolution, and their move to Australia after June 1989 in Tiananmen Square. On the studio walls, the painting gathers hundreds of figures, artworks, love stories and battles.
