Plot summary
In rural Belgium, a man lives by himself on a farm, spending his days tending the animals in his care. He fastens doll's heads to pigeons, keeps his waste in glass jars and beheads a hen for his own amusement. His strongest attachment is to a sow. He rolls in the manure with her, then forces himself on her, treating the act as mutual. The sow bears a litter of piglets. He tries to feed them milk from a spoon, but they drink from the bowl instead and keep to their mother, turning away from him again and again when he reaches for them.

- When Australian censors refused to classify Vase de Noces before its 1975 Perth International Film Festival screening, festival chairman David Roe and director Thierry Zéno appealed and won, so the film was shown. The Western Australian government's anger at the screening created a precedent for years of animosity between the two sides.
- Western Australia's government urged the Perth Film Festival to drop Nagisa Oshima's In the Realm of the Senses, threatening advance censorial review of future festivals if it went ahead. The festival pulled the film, while festivals in Melbourne and Sydney screened it without incident.
- Australia's censors refused classification for Vase de Noces again on 17 December 1976 and a third time on 1 April 1977, a rejection that banned its reproduction and dissemination nationwide. More than 40 years later the ban still stands and has never been successfully appealed.
