Plot summary
Edgar Allan Poe wants the American journalist Alan Foster to accept that his horror stories are more than invention. Poe challenges him to spend the night of All Soul's Eve in the castle of Lord Thomas Blackwood, a wager from which no guest has ever returned, and Alan accepts. The castle is covered in spiderwebs and looks uninhabited, but he finds a company of strangers inside: Elisabeth Blackwood, the lord's sister; Julia; a murderer named Herbert; and Dr. Carmus, the author of books on metaphysical medicine. A ballroom holds a crowd of dancers. Alan and Elisabeth fall in love, and Dr. Carmus begins to explain the scene unfolding around them.
