Plot summary
In the Austrian Alps of the 15th century, fear of witches and heathens governs how peasants treat those who live apart from them. Albrun, a goatherd, and her mother keep to a log cottage in snowy woodland. A traveler warns them to turn back for fear of Perchta, and one night men in goat skins and horns pound on their door, call them witches, and say they should burn. When sickness takes hold of her mother, a doctor and a nun come from a nearby town, find growths beneath her arm, and leave her to Albrun's care. Fifteen years later Albrun is a mother herself, milking goats on the hills and carrying the milk to a town that refuses to buy it. Boys set upon her until a townswoman, Swinda, interrupts.
