Plot summary
Michaela Klingler, twenty-one and epileptic, has already lost a year of schooling. Her pious mother Marianne opposes her going to university, but her father Karl rents her a room and she travels to Tübingen to study pedagogy. A former classmate, Hanna Imhof, becomes her friend and pushes her to see a doctor. In her first semester Michaela stops taking her medication. Voices and apparitions come to her, warning her away from religious objects, and she grows convinced that demons are inside her. One priest dismisses the idea. A younger pastor, Martin Borchert, believes in exorcism; the parochial priest Gerhard Landauer wants her to see a psychologist.
