Plot summary
At Jardim Gramacho, the biggest landfill in the world, on the edge of Rio de Janeiro, men and women known as catadores make a living by separating recyclable materials from the garbage. The artist Vik Muniz comes to the landfill to work alongside them, using what they pick as material for a series of contemporary artworks. Among the catadores is Sebastião "Tião" Carlos Dos Santos, one of those taking part in the project, who founded and leads ACAMJG, the association of pickers at the landfill. The project sets out to turn the objects the pickers salvage into pictures, with the money raised from selling them intended for the cooperative.

- Waste Land won more than 50 awards, among them the International Documentary Association's Best Documentary Award, which was handed to director Lucy Walker inside a garbage bag; it was also nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the 83rd Academy Awards.
- Artist Vik Muniz donated the proceeds from selling his pictures of the artworks to ACAMJG, the co-operative founded and led by Sebastião "Tião" Carlos Dos Santos, one of the catadores involved in the project, and the film's prize money went to the organization as well.
