Plot summary
Ten crewed satellites of the United Nations Sigma Project have been destroyed on contact with a barrier in space, and the project's chief, Dr. Pol Van Ponder, faces questions about its cost. A small capsule falls to Earth and is handed to the authorities; the message inside, translated from Latin, claims to come from the Masters of the Spiral Nebula Ghana. It calls humans a disease and states that any attempt to leave the planet will be stopped. The President opens discussion at the United Nations, where Jason ibn Akad argues to end the program. Van Ponder announces that he will lead the next satellite himself, and Sybil Carrington says she will go with him. David Boyer joins the crew.
