Plot summary
Nicholas keeps a gas station in the countryside. He sends a woman driver toward Twin Falls, then makes a call. Toby and Grego pull a barricade across the road, uncover a hidden way through, and take her. She is the third such disappearance on Laurel Road that month. Ralph Benton, a Hollywood screenwriter, dismisses his boss's idea that the vanishings would suit a horror picture; he is marrying soon. He stops at the station but leaves before any fuel is pumped, and then runs out of gas. Stella Saunders pulls in, is given the same directions, and lets Ralph ride along. She is Betty's cousin and will be her maid of honor at Betty's wedding to Ralph. Dr. Richard Marlowe watches the car being disabled on television.
