Plot summary
In 1955 Munich, Veronika Voss, once a leading German film star, is struggling to find roles. On the U-Bahn she meets Robert Krohn, a sports reporter who has no idea who she is, and they have lunch together. Two older women recognize her in a jewelry shop and ask for her autograph, mentioning her husband, who died in the war. Veronika and Robert begin an affair although Robert lives with Henriette, who realizes how strongly Veronika draws him. At Veronika's large house outside the city, he sees her wake in a state of manic confusion. Her behavior grows more erratic as younger actresses win the parts she wants, and the doctor she depends on, Marianne Katz, is the one who supplies her morphine.

- Veronika Voss was the penultimate film of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's career and the last of his films released during his lifetime; it was his second BRD Trilogy film but chronologically made last, after The Marriage of Maria Braun and Lola.
- Juliane Lorenz, a close associate of Fassbinder and the editor of Veronika Voss, spotted an article in Die Zeit about Sybille Schmitz's legal troubles and brought it to Fassbinder's attention.
- The film won the Golden Bear at the 32nd Berlin International Film Festival, but failed to get a nomination for the 1981 German Film Award in the Best feature film category.
- The soundtrack uses several American country songs, and Rosel Zech, as Veronika Voss, performs Dean Martin's "Memories Are Made of This" in the manner of Marlene Dietrich.
