Plot summary
Victoria "V.I." Warshawski works as a freelance private investigator in Chicago and plays the hard-boiled detective in public, though underneath she is a softy. One night, while drinking at the bar she favors, she meets Boom-Boom Grafalk, a former Blackhawks hockey player, and a romance seems to be starting. That same night he arrives at her doorstep with Kat, his thirteen-year-old daughter, and asks Warshawski to look after the girl. She agrees. Later that night Boom-Boom dies in a boat explosion. Kat then hires Warshawski to find her father's killer, and the two of them begin working the case together.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Sara Paretsky, whose novels created the detective V.I. Warshawski, was angry over the original script because it made the independent female detective subordinate to a male counterpart, the screenwriters fearing a woman could not carry the lead role.
- The producers initially wanted to set the film in Baltimore, and considered Amy Madigan, Bette Midler or Jane Fonda for the role of the private eye Warshawski.
- The film's plot differs greatly from Sara Paretsky's novel Deadlock: in the book Boom-Boom Grafalk is the detective's cousin and lifelong companion, not a chance-met stranger, he has no daughter, and Grafalk is the family name of a shipping magnate dropped from the film.
