Plot summary
On her home planet of Oni, Lum dreams of a dark hooded stranger who asks where she lives and vows to collect her once she is grown. She wakes and tries to tell Ataru about it, but he refuses to listen, so she zaps him and flies off. Omens gather around Sakura and Cherry, and a crystal ball shows Lum swallowed by darkness. Lum's parents find her Great-Grandfather and invite her to meet him, and at his house the cloaked figure from her dream appears. The old man tells of a bargain made in hunger: an antidote in exchange for a daughter of his line. The stranger says he is too old now and wants Lum as bride for his grandson, Rupa, who comes to Tomobiki High School.

- Director Satoshi Dezaki said the film's hardest challenge was building it on sensibilities other than his own. With character designer Setsuko Shibuichi and animation director Yukari Kobayashi at the centre, the staff stressed a feminine feel, coming closer to Rumiko Takahashi's original, and he struggled to satisfy manga fans, anime fans and fans of both.
- Urusei Yatsura: The Final Chapter was the fifth film in the series and the only one of them to adapt an episode from Rumiko Takahashi's manga, using the manga's final chapter, "Boy Meets Girl."
- Producer Shigekazu Ochiai wrote in the film's official pamphlet that Rumiko Takahashi wept at the preview screening, which for him marked the end of a long road they had finally reached.
