Plot summary

In Kuwait, a military unit inspects an American helicopter brought down by friendly fire and finds burnt bodies in the wreckage; Master Sergeant Sam Harper briefly springs to life among them, then dies again. His casket is shipped to Twin Rivers, his hometown, as the town prepares for Independence Day. Sam's widow Louise takes custody of the remains, which are left in the house of Sam's estranged sister Sally, where Sally lives with her patriotic young son Jody, who admires his uncle. Before dawn on the Fourth of July, Sam reanimates and takes the costume of an Uncle Sam performer.
