Plot summary
The Van Heese family meets in the Connecticut mountains on October 8, 1983, to mark Michelle's fifth birthday. Michael, one of Ma Van Heese's three sons, records the gathering on a hand-held camera while Eric, Jason, Jamie and Renee celebrate. Once the candles are blown out, the lights in the house will not come back on. Eric, Jason and Michael check the breaker outside and watch a red light cross the sky. They walk to the neighboring property and find a spacecraft in the woods, with three small aliens standing outside it. Back at the house, they bolt the doors and take up shotguns, unsure whether to stay or drive away.
