Trailer

Plot summary

Michael Waits wants a life in farming, and he sets up a month-long home exchange in the rural community of Nilbog so the family can spend their vacation there. Before the trip, his son Joshua is warned by Seth, the ghost of his late grandfather, that vegetarian goblins live in the town and poison what people eat and drink so their victims turn into plants. Seth appears again on the road, telling Joshua that Nilbog is the goblins' kingdom and urging him to make his parents turn back, but Joshua cannot convince them. Holly, Joshua's sister, and her boyfriend join the trip. The family arrives and meets the Presents, the family they are exchanging homes with.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Troll 2 (1990)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Don Packard, who played the store owner, was a patient at a nearby mental hospital and was cast and filmed during a day trip. He said he had smoked an enormous amount of marijuana before filming, had no idea what was going on around him, and that his disturbed performance was not acting.
  • The script began as Goblins, a way for director Claudio Fragasso's wife, Rosella Drudi, to vent her frustration at several friends who had become vegetarians, which she said "pissed [her] off".
  • The cast was mostly residents of nearby towns who answered an open casting call hoping to win roles as extras. George Hardy, a dentist with no acting experience, showed up for fun and was handed one of the film's largest speaking roles.
  • The crew was almost entirely non-English-speaking Italians brought to America by Fragasso, and the only fluent English speaker on set was Laura Gemser. Cast and crew relied on broken pidgin English, and the actors recalled not understanding much of what went on.
  • It was made as Goblins, but American distributors sold it as a sequel to the 1986 horror film Troll. The two films are unrelated, and Troll 2 has goblins rather than trolls.
  • Because Fragasso and Drudi spoke no fluent English, the script was written in their broken dialect, handed to the cast scene by scene, and the actors say Fragasso demanded the lines be delivered verbatim. He has denied their account, once calling them "dogs" and accusing them of lying.
  • Arnold's scene, in which Darren Ewing's character yells that he will be eaten next, became an Internet meme that often appears alongside the "Garbage Day" meme from Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2. For audience participation, Troll 2 has been compared to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and the two films have screened together.
