Plot summary
It is the Ming Dynasty. Yehe Changgong, Supreme Master of Martial Arts, duels the Manchu warrior Nalan and loses on purpose, giving up his title. He retires to Sideroad Town, in the shadow of the Imperial City, meaning to pass his days quietly with his erhu. There he meets Mingyue Xin, and their musical exchanges, part seduction and part stand-off, end in an agreement to finish their sonata on the palace roof at the next full moon. On that night, three masked thieves break into the Palace to steal a rumored treasure map, and the map vanishes in the confusion.
