Plot summary
Vicky Lowndes is widowed when her husband Bill Cardew disappears at sea and is declared legally dead. Bill's best friend and publishing partner, Henry Lowndes, comforts her, and six months later the two marry. Six months after that, the day Bill's name comes off the office they shared, Bill telephones the house. Rescued after being stranded on an uninhabited island, he asks Vicky's father, George, to send Vicky to the airport to meet him. George breaks the news, and Vicky dreads telling Bill about Henry. Bill insists on coming along while she does, and Henry offers to withdraw, but Vicky does not want him to. She leaves the choice to the two men.
