Plot summary
Everyone in his mountain village still treats David Kinemon as a boy. He is the youngest son of tenant farmers in the mountains of eastern West Virginia, and he wants his family and his neighbors to count him a man. They tell him he is tol'able enough, but no man. Esther Hatburn lives on a nearby farm with her grandfather. Iscah Hatburn is an outlaw and a distant cousin of those Hatburns, and he and his sons Luke and Saul move onto the farm against the grandfather's wishes. Esther warns David off the newcomers and says her cousins are too much for him.
