Plot summary
In 2006, nineteen-year-old Renee Yohe struggles with drug addiction, bipolar disorder and self-injury. Friends and new acquaintances, among them Jamie Tworkowski and David McKenna, offer her their love and support. A rehabilitation center turns her away, because the open wounds from her self-cutting make her too great a risk to treat. McKenna offers her a room in his home, and for five days she goes through detox there. Tworkowski writes an article called To Write Love on Her Arms and posts it on Myspace, hoping to raise the money that treatment costs. The article's title is a reply to the words she had written on her arm.
