Plot summary
Ambition drives Stig Eriksson, and his marriage to Marta Olsson bears the weight of it. The two are violinists in the same orchestra, the one Sönderby conducts, and they marry. Stig fears being mediocre and wants artistic success, while his ego is oversized, and the couple's ordinary life together turns difficult. Beethoven's Ninth Symphony shapes the film's music, and much of the story arrives in flashback.
