Plot summary
In 1848, Vogler's Magnetic Health Theater travels through Europe, a Swedish troupe whose shows deal in supernatural phenomena. Its members are mostly relatives of its leader, Dr. Albert Emanuel Vogler, who claims to have discovered animal magnetism; his wife Manda appears dressed as a man under the name Mr. Aman. On the road into Sweden the performers hear screams in the woods and take in an ill stranger, Johan Spegel, a former vaudevillian. In the next village, Consul Egerman and his wife Ottilia, who take an interest in the occult, receive them, and Tubal tells the townsmen that Albert is mute. Dr. Vergerus, the Minister of Health, calls the act quackery, and the men privately wager on what Albert can do; Police Superintendent Starbeck decides whether the public may see the show.
