Sawdust and Tinsel (1953) on Netflix

Plot summary

Albert Johansson, owner and ringmaster of the traveling Alberti Circus, struggles to pay his employees and keep the show going as the caravan moves through Sweden with his mistress, the bareback rider Anne, beside him. The next stop is the town where Albert's wife Agda lives with their sons, and he has not visited them in three years. He plans to call on them, against Anne's wishes. To borrow costumes for the evening's show, Albert and Anne visit a theater troupe playing the same town, where the director, Mr. Sjuberg, mocks their appearance before lending the clothes. The actor Frans pursues Anne, who turns him away.
