Plot summary
In the Himalayas, the antiquities hunter Hendrix and his soldiers search for the Chinese secret of immortality among the local people. Zhang Qiling intervenes and defeats him, and a village elder asks him to prevent a disaster that threatens humanity. In the present day, a writer interviews the antiquities dealer Wu Xie, who tells his story: Wu grows up in a family of grave robbers, and as a boy he enters a temple to take a relic and a figure in a bronze mask stops him. In his twenties, his uncle Wu Sanxing confronts him in a Warring States tomb, and together they find a hidden chamber. Its inscriptions describe Iron Mask, the craftsman who designed the tomb of the Snake Empress, who ruled the old kingdom of Tamutuo, in the desert now called the Gobi.
