Plot summary
Tyler Burns's father sends him to an at-risk youth program in the northern California woods, hoping the trip will cure the fear of being alone he has carried since his drunk father abandoned him there years before. At the pickup point the counselors Charles Danson and Holly Lambert introduce him to the other campers: Darrel "Panic" Lumley, Melissa Danson, Kelly Mishimoto, Rome Hernandez and Dee Dee Davenport. Near their campsite, marijuana grower Jarvis Tanner has been boosting his crop with an illegal plant steroid, and a leak in his machinery drips the chemical onto a tick nest, turning the ticks larger, faster and more aggressive. On the drive the van gets a flat tire and Darrel finds a tick on his dog Brutus; at camp, Tyler finds an egg in the boys' cabin closet.
