Plot summary
In 1930s Mississippi, Willie Starr tells a boy named Tom about her sister Alva on the abandoned railroad tracks of Dodson. Owen Legate comes to town on an unpopular errand: the railroad he represents intends to close the Dodson branch line, which supports much of the town. He rents a room at the Starr boarding house during a birthday party for Hazel Starr, the girls' mother, where the conductor Mr. Johnson and other local men wait for Alva to appear. Alva is Dodson's flirt and its main attraction, restless in the small town and set on New Orleans, the city Owen has come from. Her mother expects her to keep Mr. Johnson happy, and the men who depend on the railroad grow hostile toward Owen as word of the layoffs spreads.
