Plot summary

When the pandemic forces lockdowns and travel restrictions in 2020, human movement falls sharply and wildlife responds. In San Francisco, white-crowned sparrows change their song in response to falling noise pollution. With air pollution reduced around the world, the Himalayas become visible from Jalandhar in India, unseen there for a lifetime. The abrupt halt in global tourism empties Florida's beaches, and loggerhead turtles there have their best breeding season on record. In Alaska, where cruise ships no longer call, humpback whales hear one another's calls much more easily, and mothers can leave their calves alone while they go out to hunt.
