Plot summary
In March 1964 Winston Moseley attacked and killed Kitty Genovese in Kew Gardens, Queens. The New York Times reported that thirty-eight law-abiding citizens in Queens had watched a woman being attacked three times, and her name became a byword for bystander apathy. Her younger brother Bill was sixteen at the time. He later enlisted in the Marines rather than be an apathetic bystander and lost both legs in the Vietnam War. Kitty's parents and siblings never spoke of her, so the details of her life stayed a mystery in the family. In 2004 Bill began his own investigation, obtaining the police interviews and the transcript of Moseley's trial and looking for witnesses still alive.
