Plot summary
Margaret Ross is 76, eccentric and short of money. She lives by herself in a flat on the ground floor of a house in a town in northern England whose name is never given, and she relies on National Assistance. She hears voices, the whisperers, and asks them whether they are there. Her son, a criminal, leaves a package holding a large amount of money in her spare room; he admits a robbery to the police and goes to prison. Margaret comes across the cash, takes it to be a windfall meant for her and starts to plan. She has long imagined herself an heiress, and she believes the money has made that life real.
