Plot summary
A disheveled man walks down the main street of Mountaincrest on a winter night and steps into a bar, where he tells the bartender he does not know who he is or where he comes from. Leaving, he is accosted by the thug Joe Mitchell, who demands his money. Ma Everett hears an animal snarling from the alley and sees four legs sticking out; two of them go limp, and something steps out and runs off when she screams. Sheriff Jack Haines brings Joe's body to Dr. Jonas Gilchrist and nurse Amy Standish, who find wounds inflicted by a wild animal. A posse forms. When Deputy Ben Clovey is attacked, Haines calls the creature a werewolf. The stranger turns up at the doctor's office and says he killed Joe, then flees before Amy can give him a sedative.
