Plot summary
Tony Barrett, a New York novelist with debts from an affluent city life, is told by his publisher that his new manuscript is unpublishable. He and his wife Dora move to the run-down Connecticut farm his family owns. Their neighbor, the Polish farmer Jan Novak, buys a field from him for five thousand dollars, which lets Dora return to the city, leaving Tony at the farm to write. He plans a novel drawn from the Novaks. Manya Novak, Jan's daughter, is engaged to Fredrik Sobieski, the man her father picked for her. She and Tony grow close as he works, though Fredrik and Jan forbid her to see him. One night a snowstorm keeps Manya at Tony's house.
