Plot summary
The sanatorium where Vlad works as a watchman and lives alone stands nearly empty, and he keeps to himself. One night a married couple, Vera and Stas, arrive and ask him for a room; they quarrel and shout, and it is clear they are hiding from someone. Men who were once Stas's friends and business partners are after them. In the evening three men come and set the wooden arbor alight, douse Vlad with gasoline and threaten to burn him for what he once did, then leave. Vlad decides to help the couple, because he is hiding from his own past too.
