Plot summary
At an art gallery owned by Carl Stoker, Lee Ritter and his wife Susan meet Diane LeFanu, who invites them to her secluded estate in the desert. The couple accept and become her guests. Diane is a vampire who has lived for centuries, and neither Lee nor Susan knows what she is. Tensions arise between the husband and the wife as their host turns her attention to each of them in turn, and both of them become objects of her seduction.

- A preview of The Velvet Vampire drew a polarized reaction that made Roger Corman nervous, and he insisted Stephanie Rothman shoot an additional scene of a mechanic killed by a pitchfork, which he felt was more exciting and dynamic.
- The poor response to The Velvet Vampire contributed to director Stephanie Rothman and Charles Swartz leaving Roger Corman for Dimension Pictures.
- Stephanie Rothman said cast member Sherry Miles was very unpleasant on the set to everybody; she added that Miles was very young and insecure and took it out on everyone around her.
- Celeste Yarnall said it was her first experience having a female director, calling Stephanie Rothman very sensitive; Rothman closed the set during the more explicit shots, leaving often just Yarnall, Michael Blodgett and the cameraman.
