Plot summary
After a global pandemic devastates the population, Baron leads a tribe of survivors in a fortified area among the ruins of New York City in 2012. Cal, a former scientist in the tribe, has developed plague-resistant seeds that let the tribe grow vegetables in the barren soil, and their garden is an oasis the starving, lawless gangs outside want. One gang is led by Carrot. To make the compound safer against the raiders, Baron hires Carson, a deadly warrior who hires out his skills. Carson agrees to help, though only for a limited time: he is traveling to a small island off the North Carolina coast, where he thinks he may have relatives.
