Plot summary
Lampedusa sits about 200 kilometers off Italy's southern coast, and boats carrying migrants from North Africa and the Middle East reach it as their first landfall in Europe. On the island, twelve-year-old Samuele Pucillo carves a slingshot from the fork of a pine branch and fires stones with it beside his friend Mattias Cucina, as though at an army. When a distress call comes over the radio at the naval district office, Coast Guard vessels and helicopters begin a search at sea. A housewife, Maria Signorello, listens to a local station that plays requests and reports sightings and rescues. The migrants taken aboard are carried ashore and seen by Pietro Bartolo, the doctor in charge of the outpatient clinic, before buses move them to a reception center.
