Plot summary
Webster McGee is a divorced computer programmer in Houston who abruptly quits his job and takes up burglary and jewel theft. He leaves chess pieces and notes with chess moves behind as a calling card. For his first job he robs the rich businessman Henderling, stealing money and files that could destroy Henderling's career, and then blackmails him with those files. Rather than money, Webster asks Henderling for an introduction into high society, so that he can reach other rich houses. At a society function Henderling hosts, Webster meets Laura Keaton.
