Plot summary
A.J. Fikry is a reclusive widower who runs a bookstore on Alice Island. Since his wife's death he has given up on people, and sales at the shop are the worst in its history. He drinks to get through the days. Amelia Loman, a sales representative, meets him, and their relationship starts in antagonism. Ismay, his sister-in-law, and Officer Lambiase are the friends who stay close to him. His rare edition of Poe poems, his most prized possession, is stolen from the store. A two-year-old girl named Maya is abandoned in the shop, and A.J. is the one who finds her.
