Plot summary

On screen Naomi Klein lays out an argument about two kinds of shock. One belongs to psychiatry: shock therapy and sensory deprivation used to modify behavior. The other belongs to economics, the shock treatment she ties to Milton Friedman and the Chicago School and to the reshaping of national economies. Her account moves through Pinochet's Chile, Argentina under its junta, Yeltsin's Russia, and Iraq under Bush and Bremer. A manufactured villain, she says, supplies distraction or justification, named variously as Marxism, the Falklands, nuclear weapons or terrorists, while money and power pass from the many to the few. The account is supported by news footage, a narrator and talking heads.
