Plot summary
Paul Erling Johnson was born on a Colin Archer boat called Escape on the river Hamble near Portsmouth. His twin sister was killed when their home port was bombed in World War II, and he says he has always felt alone since then. In 1956 he crossed the Atlantic alone in an 18-foot dinghy built in 1895, then the smallest and oldest vessel to make the passage. He became a famous boat builder. Now eighty, he lives aboard his boat Cherub near Carriacou, drinks a liter of vodka each day because rum costs too much, and depends on friends.

- Director Lucia Kasova first set out to portray sailors living outside conventional social and national structures on Caribbean islands, but after meeting Paul Johnson on Carriacou she narrowed the project into an individual portrait of him.
- The Sailor was shot over two months on Carriacou in Grenada, and the shoot took place directly before hurricane season, a timing that became an element of the film's setting.
- At the 10th Meeting Point Vilnius in 2019 the project won a Post Production Award given as post-production assistance services towards completing the film, while producer Nazarij Kľujev was invited to the Marché du Film Industry Workshop in Cannes.
