Plot summary

Vilya Tishin spends his days at an OSVOD rescue station, and his time there is nearly over, since he is due to begin his military service. His mother wants to mark the occasion and tells him to bring friends and a girlfriend, but Vilya has none. He asks Olya, someone he knows only slightly, to pose as his girlfriend for the evening, and their brief encounter leads to intimacy. In the same town, Asya Vedeneeva comes home. She is a medical student now married to the tailor Grigory Ganin. Her feelings for Larikov, her literature teacher, go back to her school years and remain private. She visits him with a gift for his birthday, but he stays indifferent to her feelings.
