Plot summary
Unseen extraterrestrial machines invaded Earth and now harvest its natural resources while killing the people who remain. Survivors are scattered, and in the countryside hunger has made the remaining humans as threatening as the machines overhead. Sarah Connolly, nineteen, lives on her parents' farm with her blind brother. Its livestock and its solar panels, which keep the aliens away, are all the food and shelter they have. Bandits move against the farm, and a man dressed as a soldier arrives claiming he can help.
