Plot summary
After his wife's death and the loss of his job, Kentucky coal miner Jesse Hallam sells the family farm to Charlie, his brother-in-law, and drives his daughter Jenny and son Ted to Cincinnati, where Jenny is to have back surgery. He pays for the operation and enrolls Ted at Harding High School, then looks for work. A job application he cannot fill out ends one attempt. He is stopped by a police officer after running a stop sign, and his driver's license has expired. When he stops a vendor from cheating an elderly fruit grocer, Sal Galucci, Sal offers him work. Sal discovers that Jesse cannot read and urges him to study with his daughter Marian, the principal at Ted's school.
