Plot summary
Jill Cowper is a masters student in anthropology sharing a flat in a campus apartment complex with her husband, Brian. A man at the door introduces himself as Max, the building's plumber, and says he is making a required inspection of the pipes. Jill tells him they never called anyone. Max talks his way inside, begins chipping at the tile under the sink, takes a shower in their bathroom, and promises to come back to replace the pipes. He does, each visit leaving more damage behind. Brian never meets Max and waves off his wife's worries. When Brian learns a team from the World Health Organization will interview him about his work, he is too pleased to listen to her.
