Plot summary
Melina, the daughter of a wealthy American industrialist, has settled into London, where she parties with a beatnik crowd in Chelsea that believes in free love and passes its days smoking and listening to jazz. Moise leads the group and keeps pursuing Melina, who holds him off. She is engaged to Carson, a manager who works for her father, and she has been avoiding his calls home. Her father, Ben, worries about her and sends Carson to London to find her and bring her back for the wedding. The beatniks misdirect him, and Melina changes her address and stays out of sight. Carson keeps turning up at their parties and their building, edging closer to her.

- Submitted to the British Board of Film Classification in March 1963, the film had to endure three rounds of cuts before it was granted an X certificate and finally reached UK cinemas in 1965. The changes included a voice-over by Oliver Reed and a happier ending focusing on Nina and Carson.
- Director Guy Hamilton, the producer and the executive producer all had their names removed from the credits in protest at the censorship of the film.
