Plot summary
Santiago, an old Cuban fisherman, has gone eighty-four days without a catch. Manolin, a boy of fourteen, accompanies him while he carries his gear between the skiff and the shack, but Manolin's father will not let him go out to sea with Santiago, fearing the old man is salao, very unlucky. Santiago has not eaten in days, so Manolin fetches coffee from Martin, the café owner, and they talk about baseball and Joe DiMaggio. On the eighty-fifth day Santiago wakes early, rows far into the ocean, and baits a line with sardine. A fish takes the line.

- Director Fred Zinnemann dropped out and was replaced by John Sturges, and the budget ballooned from $2 million to $5 million while the crew hunted for usable marlin footage; Sturges later called it the sloppiest picture he had ever made.
- Some of the marlin footage used in the film came from the real world-record catch landed by angler Alfred C. Glassell Jr. at the Cabo Blanco Fishing Club in Peru, and Glassell served as special advisor on those sequences.
- The film was one of the first to use a bluescreen compositing process invented by Arthur Widmer, which combined actors filmed on a soundstage with pre-filmed backgrounds.
