Plot summary
Nica is eight years old when a car crash leaves her without parents, and she goes to live at the Sunnycreek Orphanage, where she becomes close to another girl, Adeline. As a teenager she is taken in by Anna and Norman Milligan, who also adopt Rigel, a sullen boy and the particular pride of the headmistress, Margaret. Rigel treats Nica coldly in their new home. On the first day of classes he comes to blows with a fellow pupil, and on Garden Day, when students give roses to one another without signing them, a black rose reaches Nica. Rigel says it did not come from him.
